Bring the Magic of Irish Culture & Creativity to Your Classroom This March
St. Patrick's Day is almost upon us, and this year I am offering something new and very special for your school!
Key Stage 1 and 2 students will have the opportunity to explore the magic of traditional Irish music, and the rhythms of the bodhrán, Ireland’s national drum.
The bodhrán is the heartbeat of Irish music and through this workshop, your students will achieve the following outcomes:
Learn about Ireland, and it’s rich and ancient musical heritage.
The fundamentals of playing the bodhrán- core technical and musical skills.
The different rhythms found in traditional Irish music and how to play along with traditional Irish tunes.
The workshops are designed to incorporate the aims of the UK National Curriculum for Music and will include:
Using the voice expressively to understand and express different rhythms
Playing together as an ensemble, utilising aural skills to start and stop together, increase accuracy, fluency, control and expression.
Developing listening skills with concentration and understanding to a range of high-quality live and recorded music
Experimenting with, creating, selecting and combining sounds using the interrelated dimensions of music
Developing an understanding of the history of music
Learn a jig or a reel, marvel at exciting Irish myths or just bang your beats on an Irish drum, this inclusive experience will be full of connection, creative collaboration, and fun.

Teacher Testimonials:
“I just wanted to send an email to say a huge thank you for setting Year 6 up with the drumming workshop - it was honestly fantastic. Really clear knowledge and skills were taught and coverage of the history of the instrument and music was delivered in a highlight engaging, practical and inclusive workshop. Ruairi was fantastic and had such a great way with the children and allowed success for all.”
Music Lead, Thornhill Primary School
“The workshop was delivered by an exceptional musician who had a calm and respectful approach to the staff and children. He catered from the youngest members of the school to the eldest. The parents saw videos of the workshop and were blown away by it. The Irish community in the school felt represented and included. All the children today were asking if we would still be celebrating Ireland and if we could decorate the classroom.”
Year 2 Teacher, Pakeman Primary School
“What a fantastic workshop our Y3 children had today with Ruairi! It was wonderful to see all the children with their own drums, super focused and even the staff joined in! Ruairi was brilliant with them, and teachers commented on how much the children got from the sessions.”
